English Conversation Practice With Strangers — Is It Safe, And Does It Work?

Updated 2026-09-12 · English Talk

"Talking to strangers" sounds like the hard version of English practice. For most learners it is actually the easy version, and this is why.

Why strangers are easier than people you know

The first ten seconds decide the call

Here is the most common way these calls fail: two people connect, both wait for the other to speak, ten seconds of silence pass, and someone hangs up. Neither person was rude — they were both just unsure.

So take the first turn. Every single time. One of these is enough:

You will be surprised how often the other person was seconds away from leaving and stays because you spoke.

Keeping a conversation going

You do not need interesting topics. You need open questions — ones that cannot be answered with yes or no:

And when you do not understand something, say so: "Sorry, can you say that again slowly?" Asking is normal. Pretending to understand is what kills conversations.

Safety and anonymity

On English Talk there is no name, no photo, no profile and no way to message someone after the call. It is voice only, and it ends when either person ends it.

If someone behaves badly, report them — enough reports and that device stops being matched with anyone. Do not share your phone number, address, or social media with someone you met on a practice call; there is no reason to, and a genuine learner will not ask.

How much it actually helps

One fifteen-minute call, three or four times a week, changes more in two months than a year of watching lessons. Not because the calls teach you anything — but because they force you to use what you already know, fast, out loud, with someone waiting.

Common questions

Is it anonymous?

Yes. There is no name, no photo and no profile — only voice. The other person cannot see who you are or contact you afterwards.

What if someone misbehaves?

You can end the call at any moment, and you can report the person. Enough reports and that device is banned from matching.

What if I run out of things to say?

That is normal on the first few calls. Have three questions ready — what you do, where you are from, what you did today — and the rest follows.
